The Pentagonal Model of Medical Practice: Re-defining the Role of the Physician

Abstract

This editorial introduces the Pentagonal Model of Medical Practice, a conceptual framework designed to guide physicians in translating medical knowledge into effective clinical care. The model places clinical diagnosis at its center, recognizing accurate diagnosis as the foundation of all medical decisions. Four interconnected components surround and support diagnosis: proper indication, management and referral, understanding of disease mechanisms, and procedure and technique. Together, these elements provide a structured approach to evaluating the quality of clinical practice and improving patient outcomes. The model emphasizes that successful medical care depends not only on diagnostic accuracy but also on appropriate decision-making, effective resource utilization, understanding of disease processes, and technical competence. By integrating these five domains into a single framework, the Pentagonal Model offers a simple and practical tool for enhancing consistency, accountability, and patient-centered care across all medical specialties.
